Therapy

The mode of therapy Eve primarily uses is cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT has been shown in research to be effective for many problems. In CBT, the thinking patterns and behaviours which maintain a person's problems are addressed in order to bring about positive changes and reduce distress.

CBT is structured, time-limited and active. To begin with, therapy is structured in order to achieve the best use of time. Goals are agreed upon, and during therapy Eve will work with her clients to achieve those goals. CBT treatment is usually a short-term therapy, usually requiring between 6 and 14 sessions, although this varies (see below). Finally, CBT is active in that it is best for individuals undergoing therapy to take an active part in helping themselves in their life situations. Skills are learnt in sessions and it has been found that generally, the most benefit is derived from therapy when these skills are practiced between sessions. The extent to which clients do active work between sessions is a significant factor which affects the rate of progress in therapy.

A comprehensive assessment is conducted in the first session to gain a thorough understanding of the problem. This gives a client a chance to discuss what they would like to achieve or work on in therapy. At the assessment, it will be possible to discuss the expected length of therapy. As mentioned above, CBT is intended to be a short-term treatment. Many people find that they experience some positive changes within a few sessions, and treatment is often between about 6 and 14 sessions. However, the length of therapy depends on an individual's specific circumstances.

While Eve primarily uses CBT, her theraputic approach is also informed by other modalities, such as schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy and mindfulness, which complement CBT. Eve will discuss these other approaches with you if they are appropriate for you.

If your difficulties are beyond her areas of expertise, Eve will speak to you about other options for treatment.

If there are any questions about this type of therapy, please contact Eve on 0411 966 210.
