Do you need to see a psychologist?

People see a psychologist for many reasons. Sometimes the effects of a condition such as depression are debilitating. A person may not be able to work, the simplest tasks are difficult to accomplish, they stop socialising, their relationships are affected, and they may feel completely overwhelmed and hopeless.

At other times, a person may have issues that are not strictly a disorder but they may feel confused or stuck in life and may find it helpful to discuss it with someone who is objective. It is certainly not the case that only people who are mentally unwell benefit from seeing a health professional.

You may feel that you are very happy with most aspects of your life but have an area in which you see some difficulties or in which you are not achieving as well as you believe you could be. For example, it may be the case that you enjoy your work, but when you have to give a presentation in front of a number of people, you freeze up and find it extremely difficult to think clearly and make yourself understood.

Or you may have a lot of success in your work, but have difficulties meeting a potential partner and maintaining a romantic relationship. You may feel that it is now time to address that issue, using psychological techniques to make changes.
